SINGING IN THE DARKNESS – KEITH BAYLISS
1 MARCH – 17 MAY
Singing in the Darkness is a solo exhibition by artist Keith Bayliss, that explores drawing as the starting point for creativity. In recent years Keith has been focused on showing his small tissue paper figures. However, these three dimensional constructions, like much of his work, began as drawings.
To reflect this process, Keith is sharing two small bodies of work (or two small piles of paper) Fields of Souls and Proserpina, alongside a soundscape from his son Joe Bayliss and poetry by his friend David Thomas. Both sets of drawings are concerned with aspects of loss, journeying, and finding a safe haven.

Sat at the kitchen table, the creative centre of his household, with a pile of paper and a pot of ink, Keith contemplates what will arrive on the stark white rectangle in front of him. Soon, faces start to appear, a cast of familiar characters that have populated sketchbooks over many years.
Throughout his figurative and expressive work, Keith has used a variety of mediums, from pencil and ink on paper, oil on canvas, to relief printing. More recently he has constructed small mixed media sculptures.
While focusing on drawing, Singing in the Darkness brings a range of mediums and different characters together, creating a temporary home for them to rest, feel safe, and grow.
There will be an opening in the gallery on Saturday 1 March, 12-2pm, and the exhibition will run until the 17 May.
Keith will be In Conversation, with lecturer and curator Sally Moss, at the opening on Saturday 1 March, at 1.30pm. This talk is free and there is no need to book.
