YOU HAVE ALREADY SURVIVED
17 FEBRUARY – 4 MAY 2024

you have already survived is a solo exhibition by artist-performer-writer gobscure that celebrates the Afon Wysg (River Usk).

Through poetry, paper sculpture, photography, sound, and performance, gobscure shares a cumulation of work that has been a life-time in the making. Winding their lived experience with history, myth, politics, and nature, this works reflects on the watercourse as a companion for the complex process of healing and growing post-trauma.

Characterised by a poetic style that uses plural pronouns and lowercase text, which they describe as a “reflection on our broken-mind”, gobscure rejects the barriers that the rules and standardisation of writing and expression dictates. This can be seen across their banners, in their paper installation ‘frag’, and in flow, a series of 78 digital photos (one for every mile of the river) that is accompanied by a sound piece that layers sound of the river with fragments of songs.

There will be an opening in the gallery on Saturday 17 February 12 – 2pm, and the exhibition will run until the 4 May 2024.

you have already survived is supported by a Society of Authors / Authors Foundation award; a bursary from a-n The Artists Information Company; Barrel Organ’s LIVE programme; art network north-east; Disability Arts Online; Baltic Commission; Live Theatre artistic associateship; and Llantarnam Grange.
