GALLERY 2
TRANS IBERIA – JOHN SELWAY
31 MAY- 16 AUG
Trans Iberia is a body of work by artist John Selway that spans 50 years, recording his many journeys throughout Spain and Portugal. This series was first exhibited at Llantarnam Grange in 2015, and has been on display upstairs in our Selway Room since 2021.
This exhibitions brings the collection downstairs to Gallery 2 and is the last chance to see this work before going on tour.

Roaming across seasons and countries, from late winter in the Basque country, to the beaches of the Portuguese Atlantic coast, and the high plains of the Alpujarra, these works explore the haphazard nature of many journeys and the different responses John created at the different stages of his life.
Born to Welsh parents in the small south Yorkshire colliery town of Askern, near Doncaster in 1938, John Selway lived and worked in Abertillery ever since his parents returned in 1940. John attended Newport College of Art from 1953–57 where he was taught by Tom Rathmell and first became interested in abstraction.
John’s work has been exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, and is part of Arts Council Wales, Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd (National Museum Cardiff), The Arts Council (England), Johannesburg Art Gallery (South Africa) collections, as well as a number of other public galleries across Wales and England.
John Selway passed away in 2017, leaving behind an extensive collection of artwork from 7 decades of creativity. Since then his family have collaborated with Llantarnam Grange to continuing to share John’s work with the public.
There will be an opening in the gallery on Saturday 31 May, 12-2pm, and the exhibition will run until the 16 August 2025.
