GESAMTKUNSTWERK — CSAD SHOWCASE

All work within this exhibition began life with thoughts of the humble bowl. Starting with this simple round, deep dish, Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD) Ceramics, 2022 graduating year, have found their own inspiration, references and ambition to create pieces that draw on identity, queerness, ecology, and functionality. Presented together, these pieces have come to encapsulate Gesamtkunstwerk, a compound German word that translates to: “total work of art”.
Through researching clays, oxides and glazes these makers are questioning ideas around landscape, place and belonging, through Greek pottery, human anatomy, and geomorphic lines. Drawing on the contemporary and ancient; as well as, the domestic and decorative; this showcase explores the contradictions in our relationships to objects, where they can be both invisible tools, within our daily routine, and a powerful means to observe, remember and to record our stories, culture and history.
